What to bring to your home away from home

Congratulations! You’re heading off to boarding school for the first time. The very first thing to pack is your sense of adventure and community because you are about to become part of a warm, vibrant and supportive environment. At Pickering College, residence life is centred on a residence family made up of 10 students and an associate faculty member. Dining is enjoyed family-style to allow plenty of space and time for getting to know your classmates and teachers. So the one thing you don’t need to pack is fear about how you will meet new friends and fit in. You already belong!

That being said, there are a lot of things you will need to bring with you. The school will provide you with a recommended list of clothing, personal items and extras and will let you know what can be bought on campus at the Hilltop Shop. Perhaps one of the most important things for international students to recognize is that the weather at Pickering College can range from 30°C in the fall and spring to -30°C in the winter! Good quality, warm, durable winter clothes such as boots, coat, hat and mittens are a must and can be purchased in Newmarket if they are difficult to find in your home country.

Reminders from home, such as pictures or meaningful posters and keepsakes are another must. So are items that will help you share your country and culture with your classmates, such as music, native dress or even small snacks of nut-free packaged food that you really like. You can also find food from around the world in Newmarket and nearby Toronto.

Pickering College students have access to the Computer Resource Centre in the Learning Commons, but if you’d like to bring your own electronic items contact the school for advice about voltage, adapters and cell phone costs in Canada. If you have questions, please contact our Director of Residence Life, Mrs. Shelley Frank at sfrank@pickeringcollege.on.ca. We look forward to welcoming you to your home away from home!
